Volume IX · An Open Window

Light is the
only material
worth working in.

Maison Blanche is a Provençal atelier built around two south-facing windows and the white linen that has been catching the sun on them since 1934.

CHAPTER ONE

Built around the windows.

When Étienne Blanche bought the house in 1934, the previous owner left two pairs of linen curtains and a note: "they belong to the windows, not the walls."

Ninety-two years later we still hand-wash them in lavender water every Sunday and re-hang them by Tuesday morning.

CHAPTER TWO

A house that breathes in.

Every season we move the furniture three centimetres closer to the window. By June the room has reorganised itself entirely around one beam of afternoon sun.

This is not a metaphor. We measure it with chalk.

The Atelier

Six rooms.
Six kinds of quiet.

Each room exists to honour a different hour of the day. They are not for sale. They are for staying in.

La Salle Claire

Linen curtains, oak floor, three chairs. Open from sunrise to 11:00 exactly.

Le Petit Jardin

A walled garden with one bench and four olive trees. Bring a book.

III

L'Atelier

Where the linen is cut. Doors open Tuesdays. Don't speak above a whisper.
