Volume 47 · The Reopening

The street
that became
a showroom.

A 1947 spice market on the corner of Mohammed Ali Road has just been reborn as India's first liquid-glass retail theatre. Walk in. The metal still smells of monsoon.

CHAPTER ONE

Kept by hand. Re-opened by light.

The original shutter was hammered out of recycled steel by Hari Lal in 1962. We kept the dents. We kept the rust on the hinges. We kept the small graffiti scratched in 1989 that none of us could translate.

Then we layered three centimetres of optical glass behind it. The street stays. The future starts.

CHAPTER TWO

Forty-seven artisans. One roof. Zero compromise.

From a Channapatna lacquer turner to a Kolkata leather binder, every object inside has a face attached to it. We pay them by the gram of attention, not by the unit.

The shop opens at sunrise and closes when the last cup of cutting chai goes cold.

The Atelier

Six rooms.
Six obsessions.

Each room behind the shutter is a self-contained world — built so the object can be the loudest thing in it.

01

The Spice Vault

Single-origin masalas, weighed in front of you on brass scales calibrated in 1971.

02

The Brass Room

Hand-spun lamps, urlis and pichwai mounts, lit through 4-meter overhead caustics.

03

The Loom

Live weaving from Pochampally; fabric leaves the loom and goes straight onto the wall.

04

The Future Counter

Tactile NFC-tagged objects. Tap, lift, learn the maker's life in 90 seconds.

05

The Tea Bar

Six brews from six districts, served in matka cups thrown the same morning.

06

The Dark Hall

Limited drops, by candle. Ten people at a time. Phones at the door, please.

Identity

We are not a brand.
We are a corner.

BAZAAR / 47 is owned by the eighteen families who lived above the original shop. Profits flow back to a trust that buys raw material in advance, so makers don't have to wait for monsoon to start their year.

We don't have a marketing department. We have a doorman named Imran. He has been here since 1979.
